The only deviations from the standard loading and firing procedures for the Vickers gun are as follows:
LOADING BELTS
As the 7.62X54R round is shorter in overall length than the .303, when loading the tabbed fabric belts, push the rounds into the loops short of the tab ends by 1/16th of an inch which will position them approximately correctly. The rounds should be loaded into the loops so that the length from the cartridge base to the tip of a tab is equal to the length of a .303 cartridge.
FUSEE SPRING ADJUSTMENT
The 7.62 X 54R cartridge transmits
a more powerful recoil impulse to the action than does the .303 MkVII cartridge.
Before firing the Vickers with the conversion, tighten the fusee spring another
six to twelve turns further than is correct for the gun when firing .303
ammunition.
If the fusee
tension is too strong the action will short cycle and the extractor horns
will catch on the stops at the rear of each extractor cam. When this
occurs cycle the cartridge into battery, but before firing again, relieve
the fusee tension by two or three turns and then fire to check if the
action will cycle fully. Repeat if the action short cycles again until
the action cycles in full auto.
If the fusee
tension is too slack, the recoil of the gun will be fairly harsh,
It may be tightened in two or four turn increments until the action short
cycles, then relieved a couple of turns. At this setting the fusee spring
will be absorbing the recoil impulses sufficiently to smooth the running
of the gun.
